Description |
Part of Madame Grunder made dress, ca. 1880, worn by Laura Jeanette Graham Husbands. Skirt made of Lavender printed silk with darker purple swirl outlined in cream with bubbles inside. In areas where the swirls meet, there is a cream background. Pintucks are sewn on the bias of the silk to accentuate the bustle in the back. The pintucks come to a point creating two herring bone shapes in center front. Where the pintucks end approximately two thirds down the skirt, there is a large scalloped shape created from a row of 1" lace. Inside of each scallop is a diamond shape lace appliqued with a cutout where you can see the purple silk and lining of dress. Similar to bodice. At bottom of skirt are two 2" layered ruffles of printed silk, with the inside bottom layer of 1" purple velvet trim. There is a petticoat sewn only at the waist made of cream weighted silk. At the bottom hem of the petticoat are two 6" inch wide panels that are pleated. The outermost layer is pleated silk and the hem is trimmed with 1/2" purple ribbon. The inner most layer is a stiff gauze with tight pleats and 1/2" purple ribbon at bottom. The skirt is gored at back to create a bustle shape. The skirt closes at waist with snaps, hooks, and eyes. The opening at back is 10" and has 4 snaps going up the back with hook and eye at waist. Front length 44"; Back length: 51". Bottom circumference: 160" Waist circumference 22".
