Description |
3/4 length portrait of James Smith Lithgow (1812-1902) seated in a red upholstered, high-back chair. Subject is turned 1/4 to his left. A red curtain falls behind him to the left, and a window to the right of Lithgow reveals a view presumably of a building next door, the sky, and scenery. His left hand, holding a piece of paper, rests on a green cloth-covered table. He has grey hair that covers his ears. He wears a black suit and tie with a pin on it. His white shirt has a straight standing collar. Lithgow is reportedly in the Mayor's Office with the Jefferson County Courthouse in the background (see notes). |
