Description |
Appliqued and stuffed quilt (trapunto) made for the marriage of an unidentified George and Julia, wed on March 8, 1870. Gift in memory of Ida Thierman Tittle. This is a pieced sunburst quilt with an applique border. The quilt consists of 9 sun bursts that are 16" set on an off white fabric. The center of the sunburst is a plain red fabric surrounded by plain red, green and yellow calico points. There is a large green calico swag border with hanging stuffed apple shapes and stuffed tulips in each corner with a stem and leaf. There is a plain muslin fabric on the back and the quilt is finished with the same green calico used in other parts of the quilt also used in the binding. Some of the off-white triangles in the pieced sunburst were made with a different cream colored fabric. The quilt is elaborately quilted and in the top left corner the name Julia is quilted. In the top right corner the name George is quilted. In the bottom left corner March 3rd is quilted. In the bottom right corner 1870 is quilted. There is a feathered wreath quilted around each sunburst. And there is a quilted grid in the squares and triangles between each block. The quilting in the border follows the swag with clamshell quilting above each swag. There is a star quilted in the center of each sunburst block. |
