Description |
Silk medallion quilt. There is a 17" square in bright purple silk in the center of the quilt. The center block has elaborate dimensional embroidery done in off white silk thread. There is a floral motif in each corner of the square and in the center are the letters "M. C. H." embroidered into the fabric underneath which is the year "1839." Surrounding the center square are alternating borders of a silver and purple silk brocade with embroidered flowers on top and the borders get larger in size as they move away from the center of the quilt. There is a 2.5" maroon silk interior border followed by a 2.75" exterior border in purple brocade. The purple silk is quilted in a .5" diagonal grid in the center of the quilt which becomes elongated in the center of the quilt. The brocade is quilted in a 1" grid throughout the quilt. There are blue ink lines visible in the silver and purple brocade where the top was marked for quilting. The borders are quilted in a 1" clam shell design. The quilt is backed with a striped silk in shades of red. The edges of the quilt have been folded to the inside and hand basted closed but have not been finished. Some of the basting stitches are 2.5" in length. The back of the quilt is pieced from two different red silk fabrics, one is a stripe and one is a check. |
