Description |
Collection consists of 41 photographs from ca.1920-1980 of members of the Segal, Helman, and Victor families, documenting their involvement in the Jewish community in Louisville, Kentucky, and with international programs. Included are early-20th-century photographs of the Segal Fish Market at 311 E. Jefferson St., picturing owner George Segal (1890-1953) and workers [020PC20.1-3]; photographs of Julia Victor (1903-1988) volunteering for the Red Cross Motor Corps during World War II [020PC20.29-30]; and an undated photograph of Dr. Karl N. Victor, Sr. (1900-1954) [020PC20.31]. Most of the photographs in the collection are of Helen (Segal) Helman (1912-1998) and her husband Carl K. "Kelly" Helman (1908-1989) and include ones of the 1946 installation banquet of Rabbi Solomon Roodman [020PC20.04]; social and fundraising events [020PC20.05-06, 020PC20.11]; Carl and other members of St. George Lodge in the 1950s [020PC20.07-08]; Helen doing volunteer work at Jewish Hospital [020PC20.10]; Helen with Jean Lee Bensinger, 1980 [020PC20.16]; Helen at the Nearly New Shop's annual Fashion Encore sale [020PC20.18-19]; and Helen's trips to Israel in ca. 1963-1967, depicting Helen at an Israel refugee settlement and school, Helen with Israeli politician Abba Eban, and the group of women making the mission trip to Israel [020PC20.20-28]. There is a reproduced photograph of prominent Black businessman Joe Hammond (owner of Joe's Palm Room and client and friend of Carl Helman) and Joe's wife Albertine "Pete" Hammond [020PC20.09]. Additional photographs are of Milton Trost, Walker Mendel, Bob Flarsheim, and professional golfer Leonard Loos at a Standard Club golfing event [020PC20.12-13]; Helen and Carl's daughter Roanne (Helman) Victor at a bazaar in Louisville, ca. 1970s [020PC20.32-37]; and Roanne with visiting families with Louisville's Foreign Diplomats program, ca. 1970s [020PC20.38-41]. Three oversized photographs were separated from the collection: one of Carl Helman with a group of lawyers who took the Kentucky bar examination in 1930 (Carl is in the front row, second from the right) [GBP-21 (020PC20.42)]; one of Carl Helman, Hyman Frockt, and Gary Shapira at a 1959 groundbreaking for an addition to the Four Courts Louisville Hebrew Home [EDE-21 (020PC20.43)], and one of Carl Helman in a posed studio setting [020PC20.44 (Helman, Carl K.)].
