Description |
Carte-de-visite of Dr. Mary Edwards Walker, who worked as a surgeon in a Union hospital in Louisville, Kentucky, during the American Civil War. Dr. Walker was the second female doctor in the U.S. and an advocate for gender equality. In recognitions for her assistance to the Union Army, she received a Congressional Medal of Honor in 1865. The back of the CDV is signed by Mary and states: "I am in the name of the dear old flag, yours, etc. Dr. W-" According to a note accompanying photograph, Dr. Walker had permission from Congress to wear men's attired. She continued wearing wearing clothing deemed inappropriate for women even after the Civil War. In this carte-de-visite, you can see her wearing trousers under her skirt for ease working with her patients. |
