The collection consists of varying formats including real photograph postcards, black-and-white and color photographic prints, cartes de viste, and cabinet cards. The collection primarily documents the Garr and Garth families and some other related familial lines including the Warren and Russell families. The collection primarily consists of both formal and informal family portraits, and photographs of residences and property. Dates of photographs appear to range from the mid-nineteenth century to the mid twentieth century, but the collection primarily dates between c.1850-1941. Folders 1-7: Photographs of or relating to the Garth family and related ancestors, including members of the Warren, Atchison, and Wood families. Members of this family most prominently represented in this collection include: Clara Lee Garth (née Atchison), her husband Dr. Charles Meredith Garth II, and their two children Charles Meredith Garth III and Helen M. Garth. Folders 8-11: Photographs relating to the Garr family and related ancestors. Includes photographs of the Garr residence and images of various Garr family members, many of which are described as being taken at Park Lake likely near Flemingsburg. Clara Lee Garth (née Atchison) was born in Louisville in 1882 to Benjamin F. and Minnie (Warren) Atchison. Clara Lee Garth's mother, Minnie Atchison, was the daughter of Levi Legg Warren and Mary Warren (née Wood). In 1906, Clara Lee Atchison married Dr. Charles Meredith Garth II (1879-1925), with whom she had two children, Charles Meredith Garth III (1913-1967) and Helen M. Garth (1916-1974). Dr. Charles Meredith Garth II graduated from the University of Louisville medical school and practiced medicine, becoming a specialist in the treatment of tuberculosis. During World War I, he served in field hospitals both in the United States and overseas and was promoted to the rank of captain. Charles Russell Garr was born on November 5, 1858 in Jefferson County, Kentucky. Garr studied medicine and relocated to Fleming County where he practiced medicine in the area. Garr married Sallie Rebecca Crain (1861-1950) in 1883, with whom he had two children: Charles Crain Garr (1884-1957) and Clyde Lewis Garr (1887-1968). The Garr and Garth families appear to be related, although the exact relationship between the families is unclear to the archivist. |
