Description |
The Rogers Clark Ballard Thruston Photograph collection has been divided into several series. This record is part of the Jefferson County series, which has been further subdivided to reflect specific subjects or events. This subseries of photographs, taken on 4 July 1917 and 23 October 1940, shows Enid Yandell's statue of Daniel Boone and the ruins of Ward's Mill, both of which are in Cherokee Park. The Thruston photographs taken in Cherokee Park run from TC-0090 to TC-0096. For other images of Ward's Mill see TC/Jefferson Co.-0045 (TC-0728 and TC-0729). A selection of this subseries has been described and digitized: TC-0094: J. Hampton Rich at the statue of Daniel Boone sculpted by Louisvillian Enid Yandell. The photo shows the original location in a natural setting. The statue now sits at the entrance to Cherokee Park where Eastern Parkway intersects with Cherokee Road. July 4, 1917 TC-0095: View of the ruins of Old Ward's Mill at the Middle Fork of Beargrass Creek in Cherokee Park. James Speed, President of the Board of Park Commissioners, is reading the information on the replica of an old Burrstone. The replica Burrstone was made of conglomerate materials. It explains how the stone was used to grind corn, wheat, and other grains. Actual Burrstones were usually calcified limestone and contained many fossils. October 23, 1940 TC-0096: View of the ruins of Old Ward's Mill at the Middle Fork of Beargrass Creek in Cherokee Park. A stone dam, mill, and distillery were built sometime before 1869 by David L. Ward. It was used by the farmers living in the area. By 1895 the mill was no longer in use and partially destroyed. James Speed is pictured behind the ruins. October 23, 1940 |
