Description |
The collection consists of 179 photographic items; the bulk of the collection being Stereoviews, with a few real photo postcards, larger mounted images, and two lantern slides. These photographic items were collected by Wesley Cowan focusing on Louisville and Kentucky views. Most noted scenes of Louisville include: rare interior views of the 1883 Louisville Southern Exposition; Cave Hill Cemetery; constructions views of the Fourteenth Street (Railroad) Bridge; a view of Whiskey Row; and parade scenes from the 29th Encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) held in Louisville, September 1895. Kentucky views include: downtown view of Frankfort, the Frankfort Cemetery including Daniel Boone's Monument; a view of James Mullen's Photograph Studio in downtown Lexington; construction of High Bridge of Kentucky; a partial set of Magnesium Light Views in Mammoth Cave by Charles Waldack; and a portion of Gems of Kentucky Scenery series by James Mullen. Also include in the collection is a series of hand-mounted stereoviews created by Lyman Seeks, 1965.
