Benjamin Grove (1823-1915) was born in Birmingham, England, in 1823. He immigrated to the United States before 1850 with his wife, Elizabeth Robinson, whom he married on May 23, 1848. The couple first settled in New Albany, Indiana. In 1851, Grove received his first commission for the design of St. Michael’s Cemetery in Louisville, Kentucky. Considered a prolific cemetery landscape architect, his skillset encompassed those of civil engineer, surveyor, mapmaker, and artist. Working primarily on the design of parks and cemeteries, Grove was also employed as a surveyor for the Fort Wayne and Indianapolis Railroad, and later for the Louisville & Nashville Railroad. Following the death of the Edmund Francis Lee-- the original planner of Cave Hill Cemetery-- in 1858, Benjamin Grove accepted the commission to continue the work started by Lee, designing sections A and P in the cemetry. In the 1880s, he added to the design of several more sections within the cemetery. Benjamin Grove’s active career extended from 1851 until 1909. His design work for cemeteries, parks, subdivisions, and institutional landscapes extends throughout Alabama, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Ohio, Tennessee, and Texas.
