Description |
Collection consists of 39 black-and-white and color photographs from 1945-2000, mainly of husband and wife Dr. Kurt Ackerman (1910-1998) and Gerda Pokorny Ackermann (1910-2008) and including other members of their family and of the Jewish community of Louisville. Included are 1945 photographs of Kurt in military uniform in Monterey, California [019PC45.01] and of Gerda, Kurt's sister Gertrude "Trude" Breiner (1906-1999), and Trude's husband Emil Breiner at Walla Walla Air Base in Washington state [019PC45.02]. There are 1940s photographs of Kurt, Gerda, and Trude in front of a house at 2063 Sherwood Avenue in Louisville [019PC45.03-06]; studio portraits of Trude and Emil Breiner [019PC45.07] and of Kurt and Gerda [019PC45.08-09]; and a souvenir photograph of Kurt, Gerda, Trude, and Emil at the Iceland Restaurant at 1680 Broadway in New York City [019PC45.10]. A photograph, ca. 1940s-1950s, is identified on the back as "Trude Breiner Bardstown Rd. Millinery Shop" in Louisville [019PC45.11] (the 1946 Louisville city directory includes a listing for Emil and Gertrude Breiner and a "Gertrude Hat Shop" at 2063 Sherwood Ave.). Also part of the collection are undated black-and-white photographs of the Jewish Community Center Orchestra [019PC45.12], Gerda Ackermann with Fanny Rose Rosenbaum [019PC45.13], and one taken by Louisville photographer Gus Frank of Kurt Ackermann [019PC45.14]. There are 3x5 and 4x6 color photographs, ca. 1980s-1990s, of Kurt and Gerda with family members and friends, such as Louisville Orchestra harpist Taka Kling [019PC45.15], Rabbi Herbert Waller [019PC45.19], Lillian Seligman [019PC45.21], Joan and Arnold Lynch [019PC45.22], Rosalie and Harold Eskin [019PC45.23], concert master Paul Kling [019PC45.23], and the donors of the collection Lynn and Gabriel Gruber [019PC45.17, 019PC45.20, 019PC45.24-25]. The rest of the collection consists of 3x5 photographs removed from a small album, ca. 1980s-1990s, of a vacation taken by Kurt and Gerda and of a gathering of Louisville friends at a house [019PC45.26-39].
