A multi-generational collection compiled of 74 loose photographs documenting the Brodt, Jann, and Schmidt families of Kentucky. Folders in collection are separated by the different family members. John Brodt was a German immigrant who worked as a blacksmith in Louisville in the 19th century. He and his wife, Mary Trefz, had 3 children: 1. Elizabeth "Lizzie" Brodt (1856-1933) who married Adam "Edward" Bauman (1858-1919). Lizzie was born in Jefferson County but lived most of her life in Pennsylvania, where Edward worked as a baker. They had five children: Anna Bauman, Emma Bauman Wiley, Edward Bauman, Caroline Bauman, and Mary Bauman. 2. John Brodt, Jr. (1863-1931), was never married. He worked as a blacksmith under his father, and later a repairman in an automobile repair shop in Louisville. 3. Mamie Brodt (1871-1936) who married Thomas Jann (1863-1915). Mamie worked as a seamstress in Louisville before marrying Thomas in 1900. Thomas was a son of Swiss immigrants. He worked as a harness maker and later a carpenter with a furniture store at 1406 Baxter Avenue. They had two children: Mary Jann Schmidt and Ruth Jann Knoble. Mary Jann married Christian "Christ" Schmidt in 1924. Christ was the son of two German immigrants, John and Lena Schmidt. John worked at Fehr's Brewery in 1910. Christ worked at a dye-making company (Henry Vogt Machine Shop) as well as an electrician at Louisville Electric. He was later a machinist. The Schmidt family lived at 1055 Reasor Ave. in the Schnitzelburg neighborhood of Louisville. Christ and Mary had two children, Albert J. Schmidt and Mary Ann Schmidt. 1. Albert was born in 1925 in Louisville, Kentucky. He graduated from Louisville Male High School in 1943. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1943, before being called to duty in 1944. He served as a sergeant with the 13th Army Air Forces in New Guinea and the Philippines in 1945-46, where he taught emergency communication procedures and engaged in air-sea rescue operations. After the war, Albert entered the doctoral program in history at the University of Pennsylvania. He was a Fulbright scholar at the University of London, and received his Ph.D. in early modern British history in 1953. He went on to become a professor of history at Coe College and the University of Bridgeport, where he chaired the History Department and served as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. He furthered his education at Indiana University and Moscow University, studying Russian history and language. He attended Harvard Business School and New York University Law School. Albert retired from teaching in 1990 but has remained a scholar of historical research. He married Kathryn E. Jung in 1951. See also: the DePauw University Archives for additional personal photographs and papers of Albert J. Schmidt. 2. Mary Ann Schmidt was born in 1937 in Louisville.
