Description |
Small grouping of twenty-seven black-and-white photographs of various Appalachian folk artists and arts-related people at an artists' retreat or tour, possibly at Hindman Settlement School, in November of 1986. Also included in the collection is a group of 35mm filmstrips of color negatives from an artist retreat in 2001 that feature notable folk artist, Hazel Kinney. Notable artists or art-adjacent people (specifically board members from Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft) featured in the collection are Charley and Noah Kinney, Arturo Alonzo Sandoval [024PC13.14, .18], Lynn Sweet [024PC13.13], Jacque Parsley [024PC13.13-.14], Sue Rosen [024PC13.13, .24], Mary Norton Shands [024PC13.24], and Larry Hackley [024PC13.11]. Several of the photographs document Charley and Noah Kinney [024PC13.01-.12], prominent folk artists out of northeastern Kentucky. The 35mm color negatives [024PC13.28-.34] appear to be related to an art retreat and mostly feature Hazel Bateman Kinney but are unrelated to the other items. Charley and Noah Kinney were folk artists out of Northeastern Kentucky; both born, and lived their entire lives, in Toller Hollow in Lewis County at Big Salt Lick. Living together in a small log cabin with Noah's wife, Hazel, the Kinney's 35-acre property had a tobacco barn, a henhouse, and several sheds (which they used as workshops). The Kinneys were self-sufficient and lived off the land around them, farming tobacco, corn, hens, chickens, and ducks, and hunting squirrels, rabbits, and other wildlife. Some of Charley's earliest childhood memories recall his father playing the fiddle. Music was an integral part of the Kinneys childhood, playing and performing Scots-Irish tunes that had been passed through the generations from their Appalachian ancestors. The brothers both dropped out of school in the 3rd grade and began seriously creating art in the 1970s. Animals were a favorite subject for both brothers, creating chickens and foxes out of wood or clay, paintings of dogs, coons, cats, etc. Charley was a natural storyteller. He created dramatic portrayals of natural and supernatural events inspired by emotions and dreams in the form of watercolors, drawings, and fiddle playing. Noah created a series of puppets and statues that were combined with their instrumental performances, attached to the strings of instruments making the puppets dance around on stage with him. Charley played the fiddle and Noah played the guitar. For several years, the Kinney's barn served as the "spiritual epicenter of fiddle music in northeast Kentucky."
