Description |
Small group of photographs depicting the Thomas family, who have resided in Eastwood, Jefferson County, Kentucky, since the early 20th century. The parents, Lucy Mickens and Robert Thomas Sr., had three children, Miles C. Buck Thomas, Estella Thomas, and Robert L. "Jack" Thomas. These photographs have been pulled from a manuscript collection, which features the two brother's letters to their mother while they were overseas during World War 2. These images document events, celebrations, and everyday moments in the life of the Thomas family. Not all individuals have been identified. Only a sampling of images are attached. Identified Images Include: 022PC30.01: Image of man and young child. Labeled "Uncle Earnest" 022PC30.07: Image of a man in military uniform in front of a truck. Possibly related to the military service of either brother. Miles writes in his letters about truck driving in North Africa, but Robert drove trucks as well 022PC30.08: Image of three women identified as "Betty, Hallie (?), and Joyce". Taken in front of Betty and Dick's new home in Michigan 022PC30.09: Signed portrait of Betty 022PC30.10: Signed portrait of Joyce 022PC30.11: Season's Greetings card from the "Tucker Family", featuring an image of three small children 022PC30.12-13: Two signed and annotated portraits of Latacha Scott (possibly), with copy of obituary attached. 022PC30.14-16: Three images that show Estella Thomas in a department store. The 1950 census lists her occupation as in a store. Acccording to the donor, Estella worrked for Sears & Roebuck for many years as was possibly one of the first African American employees. 022PC30.17: Image of four children labeled "Jack's Children". 022PC30.18: Image of a boy in front of a home, labeled "James Greenhill". 022PC30.24: Image of two women looking through a photo album, dated from May 11, 1966. Due to matching up handwriting samples from the papers collection, the African American woman can be possibly identified as Lucy Mickens. 022PC30.25-29: Images which can be dated to ca. 1955, and possibly show Lucy Mickens in her home. 022PC30.31-32: Images of a wedding ceremony. Could be either Miles or Robert with their respective spouses. |
