Description |
This small collection includes seven early twentieth-century photographs (ca. 1910-1920s) of the Forsting family (children), mostly portrait photography during religious milestones (First Communion is the obvious one, and perhaps baptism for the younger children). The Forsting children were born to Theodore F. B. Forsting and Anna May Hough Forsting, both the grandchildren of immigrants (German and Irish respectively). Anna May began working for a shoe factory when she was only 15 years old, living with her brothers and sisters in the Portland neighborhood of Louisville after the death of her parents. Theodore was a laborer at a tobacco factory at this point. Theodore and Anna married in Louisville in 1907 and moved to a house on W. Madison Street in the Russell neighborhood of Louisville. Later in life, he worked as a scale clerk, or weigher, for the Pittsburg Coal Company, which also operated a coalyard in Louisville. Theodore and Anna May had five children together: Mary Adelaide, Charles, Lucille, Evelyn, and Robert. Mary Adelaide began working as a bookkeeper in 1929, and later found work as a stenographer at a jewelry store. She married William K. Schlachter in 1933 and continued her work as a bookkeeper up until her death in 1951. Charles died of appendicitis at age 15. Lucille also worked as a stenographer as a young woman and continued as a stenographer after marrying William Reddington. They had two kids together. Lucille died of cancer in 1953. Evelyn is noted as being a "new worker" in 1940. The next year, she married James Nicholas. They had 5 children together. Robert was a truck helper for Falls City Brewing when he died of pneumococcal pneumonia at age 38.
