Description |
A collection of eight (8) cabinet cards of the Smyser family. The cabinet cards feature photos of Jacob Lewis Smyser (1834-1934), his wife, and their children and grandchildren. J. L. Smyser was born in 1834 to John Wesley Smyser and Mary Elizabeth Smyser in Newburg, Jefferson County, Kentucky. He married Fanny Lithgow (1842-1925) in 1861; they had three children together. Smyser lived in Louisville until his death in 1934 at the age of 100. Smyser was an active participant in Louisville society. He worked in various ventures in the business, finance, and real estate sectors. He was on the board of directors for the American Car & Foundry Company in the 1900s and was also trustee of the Seelbach Hotel during that same period. He was vice president of the Lithgow Manufacturing Company for several decades. He participated on many executive committees around Louisville, such as the Coliseum Committee and the Southwestern Relief Commission for the Aid of the Destitute in the Southern States during the 1860s. Most notably, Smyser was in land development as a partial owner of the Audubon Park Realty Company, which was responsible for the development of the Audubon Park neighborhood. Smyser's wife, Hettie May. 021PC14.06: Harry Lee Smyser (1864-1943), the son of James Lewis Smyser and Frances Lithgow Smyser. 021PC14.07: Harry Lee Smyser's wife, Rebecca Gwathmey Smyser (1870-1951), and daughter, Frances Smyser Middleton (1895-1918). 021PC14.08: Lewis Tyler Smyser (d. 1942). Most photographs are labeled as taken during January 1898. Three others [021PC14.01, 021PC14.05, and 021PC14.09] are undated. |
