Description |
The unidentified solider in the image is part of the 102nd New York Infantry. Some of the men in this infantry unit were mustered out in Louisville or died in Louisville in late summer of 1865. This was determined based on the uniform and hat he is holding. The photographer mark on the back is what ties the image to Louisville. The image was taken by S. Heineman Photographer, located at Main St. between Fourth & Fifth, South Side. S. Heineman worked at the Bee Hive Gallery on Main Street between 3rd and 4h Sts. in 1858 and is also listed as Heineman & Flexner as another photograph studio name. This was very common of photographers to move around and work with other photographers in brief stints. |
