Collection consists of 70 photographs relating to Elizabeth Madox Roberts and her family. Elizabeth Madox Roberts (1881-1941) was a prominent poet and novelist from Springfield, Kentucky. She was born the second of eight children to Mary Elizabeth Brent (1853-1951), a teacher, and Simpson Roberts (1848-1933), a teacher and civil engineer. The collection includes photographs of at least two of Roberts's siblings: a series of photos taken overseas during World War I by/of her brother Ivor (a.k.a. "Kero") Roberts [021PC22.47-.56] and a mounted collage of the class and faculty of the Louisville College of Pharmacy, 1906-1907, which features a portrait of her brother John Douglas Roberts [021PC22.70 (oversized)]. Roberts attended Washington County, Kentucky public schools during her youth and later attended Covington High School in Covington, Kentucky. Roberts always considered Springfield her home, but throughout her life she also spent time in Colorado and Florida. She attended the University of Chicago from 1917 to 1921, where she found a lifelong literary community and began her professional writing career. During her lifetime, Roberts published three volumes of poetry, two collections of short stories, and seven novels, two of which - The Time of Man (1926) and The Great Meadow (1930) - were contenders for the Pulitzer Prize. Roberts was diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease in 1936 and died in 1941 at the age of 60, after a lifetime of health struggles. The collection includes several portraits of Roberts [021PC22.01-.05, .34, and .66-.69 (oversized)] and photos of the Roberts family home in Springfield, known as "Elenores," where Roberts lived for most of her life [021PC22.39-.46].
